Reviewer Comments: A dark, mysterious "palace" ; a curse surrounding the wealthy and powerful family who owns the place ; a heroine with an unexplainable gift in healing who can be perceived as a witch among the commoners ; a hero with another unexplainable gift of his own ; an old, unfriendly man who is believed to be a murderer ; mysteries of murdered women ; secret passageways with deadly traps ; strong, chilling wind, thunderstorms, all these ought to be elements of a gothic romance...but somehow, despite the right elements, the true dark, gothic feeling one ought to experience remains missing throughout the story. And the excessive usage of Italian words in between the conversations can be tiresome after some time.

After reading some of Feehan's Dark series (though they cannot be categorized in the same theme as gothic), I'm still hopeful in reading better gothic story in future. Her next book, 'Lair of the Lion', may prove to be a better reading.
